Essential Care, Nutrition & Enrichment

Kitten Food & Transitioning

Our kittens are raised on a simple, consistent feeding program designed to support healthy growth and digestive stability. They have access to dry food throughout the day for free-choice grazing and receive scheduled wet food meals daily.

Current Diet

Wet Food: Nulo MedalSeries Chicken & Turkey Pâté
This is the primary food we feed our kittens and adult cats. A moisture-rich diet helps support hydration, digestion, and long-term urinary tract health.

Dry Food: 4health All Life Stages Formula
Available through Tractor Supply, this kibble is offered free-choice throughout the day and complements our feeding program.

If you decide to transition your kitten to a different food, we recommend making changes gradually over 7-10 days to help avoid digestive upset.

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they are biologically designed to obtain their nutrition primarily from animal-based proteins and fats. Unlike humans and dogs, cats have unique dietary requirements and depend on nutrients such as taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, and other essential compounds that are naturally found in animal tissues.

Because feline nutrition is a constantly evolving topic, we encourage all kitten families to continue learning beyond the basics. One of our favorite educational resources is the Facebook community Feline Nutrition: Feed Cats Like Cats. Their extensive collection of guides, food comparison spreadsheets, nutritional analyses, and feeding resources covers everything from commercial diets to raw feeding and can help you make informed decisions for your cat throughout their life.

Whether you choose canned food, kibble, raw, or a combination approach, our goal is simple: provide a diet that is complete, balanced, species-appropriate, and sustainable for your household.

We encourage every owner to explore the available resources, evaluate the evidence, and choose a feeding plan that keeps their cat healthy, hydrated, and thriving.

One of the most common concerns for new kitten owners is litter box training, but the good news is that our kittens leave already well-established in their litter habits. To encourage adaptability and make the transition to a new home as seamless as possible, they are exposed to multiple litter types and box styles while growing up.

Litter Experience

Our kittens are comfortably using a variety of litter substrates, including:

• Clumping clay litter
• Soy and tofu-based litter
• Pine pellets
• Recycled paper pellets

This flexibility makes it easier to transition into the system that works best for your household.

Pine Pellet Tip

If you’re interested in using pine pellets, Tractor Supply’s horse bedding pellets are an economical option and often cost only a fraction of traditional cat litter.

Choosing the Right Litter Box

Maine Coons grow into large, powerful cats, so bigger is almost always better when it comes to litter boxes. We recommend spacious boxes with high sides and placing them in quiet, low-traffic areas away from food and water dishes.

Automatic Litter Boxes

For families interested in self-cleaning systems, we have had excellent experiences with both the Popur X5 and the Pet Pivot automatic litter boxes.

The Popur X5 Self-CleaningLitter Box is our favorite option for large Maine Coons thanks to its spacious design, open entry, and straightforward cleaning process. The Pet Pivot is also a solid choice and performs well, though it requires a bit more maintenance, including periodic replacement of the collection mats.

Helping Your Kitten Adjust

When your kitten first arrives home, we recommend starting them in a smaller area, such as a bedroom or office, with easy access to their litter box, food, water, and a safe place to rest. Once they are confidently using their litter box and feel comfortable in their new environment, you can gradually expand their access to the rest of the home.

The Pet Pivot link is through TikTok Shop for the best pricing, it’s also sold on Amazon.

Maine Coons are highly intelligent, social, and active cats. As a working breed, they thrive when given appropriate outlets for both physical and mental stimulation. Without enrichment, they will often create their own entertainment in less desirable ways, such as climbing curtains or exploring countertops.

Interactive Play

Wand toys with feathers or securely attached fabric pieces are essential for bonding and supporting healthy coordination and exercise. Interactive play also helps satisfy natural hunting instincts. For best results, end each play session with a small meal or treat to complete the natural hunt-catch-eat cycle.

Independent Enrichment

In addition to interactive play, cats benefit from engaging independent toys throughout the day. We recommend durable rolling toys, puzzle feeders, tunnel systems, and other mentally stimulating enrichment items. Rotating toys on a weekly basis helps maintain interest and prevents boredom.

Providing a mix of structured play and independent enrichment supports emotional balance, confidence, and overall well-being in growing Maine Coons.

Maine Coons are natural climbers who thrive in elevated spaces where they can observe their environment from above. Providing safe, sturdy vertical enrichment not only supports their physical activity but also builds confidence and helps reduce stress in the home.

Choosing the Right Structure

Because of their size and strength, many standard cat trees are not built to safely support adult Maine Coons long term. Lightweight or narrow-base structures can become unstable as cats grow. Instead, look for furniture-grade construction with solid wood or reinforced materials, wide platforms, and thick, durable scratching posts.

Wall-mounted shelving systems and window perches can also be excellent additions, especially when anchored securely and designed with larger breeds in mind.

Recommended Heavy-Duty Options

We consistently see excellent durability and stability from Cat Tree King and KBS Pets. Both brands focus on heavy-duty construction designed to safely support larger cats, making them reliable choices for Maine Coon households.

Investing in properly built vertical space not only protects your cat physically but also enriches their daily environment in a meaningful way.

Grooming plays an essential role in maintaining the health and beauty of a Maine Coon’s dense, semi-long coat. Introducing gentle handling early helps kittens become comfortable with routine care and builds long-term trust between cat and owner.

A consistent grooming routine not only prevents matting and reduces shedding, but also supports skin health, coat condition, and overall comfort.

Regular Brushing Routine

Maine Coons benefit from brushing 2 to 3 times per week, with daily brushing recommended during seasonal shedding. Attention should be given to the undercoat, particularly in areas where friction naturally occurs such as behind the ears, under the neck area, and along the body.

Using the right tools is essential. Standard brushes often do not reach the dense undercoat, which is where most tangles begin. A wide-tooth metal comb (such as a greyhound-style comb) is ideal for working through the coat safely, while a slicker brush can be used afterward to smooth and finish the coat.

Regular brushing helps prevent matting, reduces loose hair in the home, and supports the natural distribution of skin oils for a healthy coat texture and shine.

Managing Coat Oils & Build-Up

Some Maine Coons may develop oil buildup along the neck or back over time. When needed, a gentle de-greasing product such as Groomer’s Goop can be used to lift excess oils and debris without frequent bathing, which can strip natural skin oils.

For light maintenance between deeper cleans, a small amount of cornstarch can be used as a natural absorbent to help refresh the coat.

Hygiene & Sanitary Trimming

Maintaining cleanliness around sensitive areas, especially the hind end, is an important part of grooming long-haired cats. When necessary, small quiet pet clippers can be used for gentle sanitary trimming to keep your cat clean and comfortable. The goal is always calm handling and minimal stress.

Claw Care

Nail trimming every 1 to 2 weeks helps prevent overgrowth and keeps paws healthy. Use sharp, cat-specific nail trimmers and pair each session with calm handling and positive reinforcement to create a relaxed, predictable routine.

The Grooming Suite

A complete grooming toolkit makes routine care easier and more effective. We recommend investing in high-quality tools designed for long-haired breeds, including a wide-tooth metal comb for undercoat care, a slicker brush for finishing, and quiet, pet-safe clippers for sanitary trims.

With consistency and the right tools, grooming becomes a calm, bonding experience that supports both physical health and emotional comfort throughout your cat’s life.

Treats should be used intentionally as part of training, handling, and bonding experiences. They are especially useful during grooming, nail trims, harness introduction, and other new or unfamiliar situations. Keeping treats purposeful helps maintain their value as a strong positive reinforcement tool.

Treats We Recommend
We prefer simple, single-ingredient treats such as freeze-dried proteins including minnows, salmon, beef liver, or similar options. These provide high-value rewards while keeping ingredients clean and easy to digest.

Supplements to Explore
There are a variety of supplements that can be incorporated into a cat’s routine depending on individual needs and preferences. The most common categories include omega-3 support, digestive health, and immune support.

Omega-3 Support
For omega-3 fatty acids, we recommend either a high-quality supplement such as Welactin or whole food options like sardines in water with no added salt. Both can support skin and coat health, joint function, and overall wellness when used appropriately as part of a balanced diet.

Digestive Support (Probiotics)
Probiotic supplements such as FortiFlora and Proviable are commonly used to support healthy gut balance, especially during transitions, dietary changes, or stressful periods. They help maintain consistent digestion and overall gastrointestinal stability.

Immune Support (Immuno-5)
Immune support products like Immuno-5 are sometimes used during times of stress or transition to help support general immune resilience and overall well-being.
